I'm not a luthier, but I do have a CNC and hope to build a guitar one day. Currently have a onefinity woodworker, have had a shapeoko 3 and built an MPCNC. If you just want to get your feet wet as cheap as possible an MPCNC is a good option, it does well with wood, just much slower than a more professional machine. If your machine is not super ridged you may not be able to cut fret slots . You would use a .022 end mill . If it’s not ridge enough and using a router vs a spindle on the CNC for example the end mill may break no matter show slot you go. On the CNC machine I used before used a router and could never cut fret slots with it.Also, in the video the machine doesn't cut anything out in 3D. Doing that with a laser would be extremely difficult, and the surface finish would be complete trash. So, if I want a machine that I can cut fretboards out on, and possibly even radius with the same machine for k, a standard used CNC machine is a much better idea.
This is just a CnC version of the old luthiers trick to use a triangle file in the fret slots to make fretting easier. Hope this helps! Reply reply . CNC Machine. The CNC I use to machine my guitars was designed by me, and started off as a model in Solidworks. It has a 42×35 working area, which easily allows me to machine Necks, Guitar bodies etc. Originally I started with a wood router mounted as my spindle, but eventually moved on to a VFD, which gives me greater flexibility over speeds and feeds.
Safety : CNC machines can be safer to use than hand-made methods, as they eliminate the need for workers to handle hazardous materials or perform repetitive tasks that may lead to injury. And hand shaping isn’t that hard - going to be faster than working out how to do a one off on the CNC. Or just use the machine to make some templates and saw and route using traditional tools. CNC will be more accurate and precise. But it won’t necessarily be faster.
Thank you! I see, I didn't realize the machine was small, so basically 12cm is your working range so you have to do one inlay at a time. You would have to radius the fretboard the old school way with either hand tools, a router and jig, or the long way (but cheapest) of a radius block and sandpaper to just grind the radius into the fretboard. This goes double if you’re planning on creating a custom CNC guitar by Frankensteining different designs together. Know Your CNC Router. If you’re rocking a lower-cost 3018 CNC router, you’ll struggle with carving out .The Shapeoko, Onefinity, Longmill, etc. are all hobby grade machines with some metal and some wood. Of all of those, the Shapeoko will probably be the best quality. But, it's limited. The FactoryDirect is a semi pro machine, and in a totally different league than the other machines. But, I'm pretty sure there are a LOT of hidden costs there.
